China Steel Water Tanks Manufacturer Municipal and Industrial Duty

Steel water tanks for municipal and industrial duty come in three practical builds: welded carbon steel, bolted glass-fused-to-steel, and hot-dip galvanized, plus stainless where chloride rules. The right answer depends on the fluid, the approvals and the site, not on price per cubic metre. Whichever is chosen, the procurement file should require the panel or plate test records, the coating and gasket specification with its fluid approval, a foundation calculation against the soil report, and a supervisor present for the final interior check and the first fill.
A water tank tender arrives with a capacity, a location and a price, and the specification is often a single paragraph copied from the last plant. That is not enough to choose between a welded shell, a bolted glass-fused-to-steel shell and a galvanized one, and the choice quietly commits a decade of maintenance. This article sets out how a municipal or industrial engineer should frame the inquiry to a manufacturer outside the country: what to specify, which documents to require, and what the acceptance test should contain so the asset hands over cleanly.
Three Build Routes for a Water Tank
Welded, bolted and galvanized each solve a different problem. A welded carbon steel tank is the conventional utility answer, easiest to insulate, field coat and modify, and best suited to sites with a skilled welding crew and a long shutdown window. A bolted glass-fused-to-steel tank arrives with the enamel fused at the factory at 820 to 930 °C, the layer at 0.25 to 0.45 mm rated above 3,450 N/cm², every panel spark tested at 1500 V DC, and a Ra below 0.8 µm finish that meets drinking water and food contact requirements; it erects without field welding, inspects panel by panel, and can be grown later. A hot-dip galvanized tank to GB/T 13912-2020 is the economical choice for clean water, fire reserve and dry bulk, relying on zinc sacrificial protection; it is unsuitable for acidic or high chloride water and for potable contact because of zinc migration.
Material Choices by Fluid
The fluid decides the interior, and the interior decides the approvals. Potable water needs NSF/ANSI 61 and WRAS assessed lining and gasket, and a smooth inert surface to keep biofilm low; FDA and LFGB apply if the water goes into a food or beverage process. Fire reserve water is sized against NFPA principles for the protected area and duration, and may need an FM position. Cooling and process water with moderate chlorides is usually fine in enamel or epoxy. High chloride water such as seawater or brine calls for 316L, duplex, or enamel, since chloride pitting is the governing failure. Sewage and industrial effluent with sulfide calls for enamel. Leaving this table out of the specification is how plants end up with a tank that is structurally perfect and chemically wrong.
Documents to Require Before Award
A common file makes the comparison fair. Ask each bidder for the general arrangement with the nozzle list, the plate or panel schedule with serial numbers, the wall thickness by course with the joint efficiency, the foundation load case with the soil parameters, the anchor design, the coating specification with surface preparation, the gasket schedule naming the material, the welding or fusion and test records, the wind and seismic calculation, and the warranty with the inspection interval. Add the commercial set: delivery term, penalty for delay, spares provision, field supervision hours and the cost of a lining repair. Bidders who return the file quickly are showing you how the job will run.

Delivery, Freight and Erection Reality
Overseas supply shifts the risk to the shipping and erection plan. A welded tank may ship as one large-diameter cylinder, which filters the route and may need a route survey or a load-out permit; a bolted tank ships as flat or nested panels and usually opens the route, but the erection then depends on the foundation reaching design strength and on the crane being in the window. Confirm the packing is keyed to the serial numbers and protected at the edges, because a chipped enamel edge in transit becomes a corrosion origin. Build the schedule backwards from the required first fill: foundation, production and testing, shipping, customs, assembly, inspection, commissioning. Delay penalties should name the manufacturer's own production period, not a range.

Center Enamel Engineering Capability
Center Enamel (Shijiazhuang Zhengzhong Technology Co., Ltd) has designed and fabricated bolted storage tanks since 2008. As the first glass-fused-to-steel (GFS) tank manufacturer in China, the company holds close to 200 enamel-related patents, produces roughly 300,000 enamel-coated steel plates a year, has completed more than 30,000 installed projects and supplies its tanks to over 100 countries. The new 150,000 m² production base was added to raise output capacity, and single tanks are supplied up to 60,000 m³. Manufacturing runs under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001, with product certification including NSF/ANSI 61, WRAS, FDA, LFGB, CE (EN 1090), ISO 28765, FM, BSCI and EUROCODE, and design referenced to AWWA D103-09, AWWA C550 and NFPA where the application requires it.
For municipal and industrial water service this covers all three build routes above, the fluid-matched interior, the approvals mapped to the lining and gasket, and the supervision through the final interior check and the first fill.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Which is cheaper, a welded or a bolted water tank?
A1: At a comparable volume the first cost can be similar, with welded often lower for a simple tank in an easy location and bolted better where field welding is unwanted or the route is tight. The larger difference arrives in year ten, when a bolted panel can be replaced instead of a whole coating system.
Q2: Can a galvanized tank hold potable water?
A2: Generally not, because zinc migration into drinking water is the problem rather than the strength. Galvanized to GB/T 13912-2020 is an economical choice for clean water storage, fire reserve and dry bulk, not for potable contact.
Q3: What approvals come with a potable glass-fused-to-steel tank?
A3: NSF/ANSI 61 and WRAS for the lining and gasket, ISO 9001 for the factory, FM where the tank feeds a fire protection system, and FDA or LFGB where the water goes into a food process. Ask for the approval to name the gasket, not just the lining.
Q4: Who should design the foundation?
A4: Ideally the tank supplier, once you send the soil report, frost depth and wind and snow values. An uneven settlement is the most common cause of flange leakage in a bolted tank and the most expensive field problem to correct.
Q5: What should the final acceptance include?
A5: A panel or weld test record review, a torque record for flange bolts, a full-level interior inspection with proper lighting and access, a functional test of the level device, overflow, drain and vent, a first fill done slowly, and an as-built drawing set.
Q6: Is capacity growth possible?
A6: For a bolted tank yes: additional rings raise the height, or a parallel tank is added on a prepared pad. For a welded tank it means a new tank on a new foundation, so the bolted route is worth pricing where expansion is likely.
A steel water tank is a straightforward asset when the fluid, the approvals and the site loads are written down before the inquiry goes out. The three build routes each have a clear place, and the interior material should follow the water chemistry rather than the budget. Require the same document set from every bidder, keep the delivery term and the supervision scope explicit, and award on the file. The result is a tank that passes its first fill and still passes its first decade inspection.
