GFS Wastewater Treatment Tank for Equalisation and Sludge Storage

A GFS wastewater treatment tank carries the liquid handling duties of a treatment train in an atmospheric bolted vessel whose barrier is fused glass rather than paint. The enamel is fired at 820 to 930 °C, 0.25 to 0.45 mm thick, rated above 3,450 N/cm², spark tested at 1500 V DC on every panel, and tolerant of pH 1 to 14. That covers equalisation, neutralisation hold, sludge and filtrate storage, and chemical dosing hold, without an internal recoating programme. Panels about 1.2 m wide bolt together with 8.8-grade bolts and EPDM gaskets, and the design life is 30 years or more.
Inside a wastewater treatment plant there are a dozen vessels that never get the attention a clarifier or a digester gets, and they generate most of the maintenance calls. The balancing tank that absorbs the shock load, the neutralisation hold that gets a quarter acid and a quarter caustic in the same week, the sludge and filtrate storage that has to hold until the dewatering runs, the dosing hold nobody wants to open. All of them sit in aggressive, alternating, sometimes hot liquid and all of them have to stay leaktight. Teams specifying a GFS wastewater treatment tank are usually replacing a welded vessel that needed an internal recoat every few years. The engineering case is about the lining mechanism and about the volumes that the process diagram never spells out.
Where the tank sits in the train
Four duties, each with its own sizing rule. Equalisation comes from the workshop discharge curve, and needs the peak minus the average over the critical window. Neutralisation hold is sized from the dosing rate and the mixing time, with enough residence to confirm the pH before the stream goes downstream. Sludge and filtrate storage is sized from the sludge production rate and the dewatering cycle, which for a plant that runs the press only a few hours a day means a long holding time. Chemical dosing hold is small but critical and usually needs secondary containment.
Each duty has a different dead volume allowance, and confusing them is how an oversized tank underperforms. A neutralisation hold needs volume for the mixing and the confirm time, not for the full equalisation window. A sludge store needs volume for the peak sludge production, not for the peak flow. And every one of them loses working volume to the settled layer and the scum, which is why the outlet elevation sits well above the bottom and why the tank should be desludged on a fixed interval rather than when somebody notices.
Why fused enamel fits treatment duty
The lining mechanism decides the maintenance profile. The enamel powder is fired onto the prepared steel between 820 and 930 °C, so the glass and the steel become one composite with no adhesive layer between them. The finished enamel is 0.25 to 0.45 mm thick, rated above 3,450 N/cm², and rougher-free at a surface roughness below Ra 0.8 µm, which resists deposit build-up and washes down. There is no organic film to lose adhesion and lift in sheets, so the classic maintenance cycle of an internal paint job simply is not in the picture.
What remains is the edge question. The cut edge of a panel at a flange or a nozzle exposes steel, and a chip there is where the process starts, so the panel edge is treated at the factory, panels are handled with lifts rather than dragged, and the panel orientation is kept consistent from ring to ring so the treated edges line up. That is the whole of the real enamel maintenance story.
Chemistry is rarely the limit. The enamel covers pH 1 to 14, so a tank can take a neutral clarifier overflow and a caustic cleaning batch without a change of lining. Where sulfide is present, enamel tolerates it across the range; the gas handling side still needs its own controls.

Selecting the configuration
For a treatment train the useful default is a bolted shell with panels roughly 1.2 m wide, because the assembly is light, the site crew is small, and the tank can be extended with an extra ring or a second unit as the plant grows. The lining is fused enamel for the duties above, and fusion bonded epoxy at 180 to 280 µm to AWWA C550 where the project already runs an epoxy coating line or where a non-standard spool needs the same protection. Hot dip galvanizing to GB/T 13912-2020 is economical for the clean water side and chemical holds, and is avoided in strong acid, strong alkali, high chloride and any food contact.
The nozzle and baffle layout does more for performance than an extra metre of height. A baffled inlet well at the inlet end stops short circuiting, a clear well with a wall at the outlet end gives a controllable level, and the outlet elevation above the settled layer keeps the sludge bench from walking out into the downstream unit. Agitation matters wherever solids settle: without it the effective volume shrinks below the nameplate figure, which is the most common reason a correctly sized tank still looks undersized in practice.

Center Enamel Engineering Capability
Center Enamel (Shijiazhuang Zhengzhong Technology Co., Ltd) has designed and fabricated bolted storage tanks since 2008. As the first glass-fused-to-steel (GFS) tank manufacturer in China, the company holds close to 200 enamel-related patents, produces roughly 300,000 enamel-coated steel plates a year, has completed more than 30,000 installed projects and supplies its tanks to over 100 countries. The new 150,000 m² production base was added to raise output capacity, and single tanks are supplied up to 60,000 m³. Manufacturing runs under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001, with product certification including NSF/ANSI 61, WRAS, FDA, LFGB, CE (EN 1090), ISO 28765, FM, BSCI and EUROCODE, and design referenced to AWWA D103-09, AWWA C550 and NFPA where the application requires it.
For wastewater treatment duty this covers the equalisation, neutralisation and sludge storage sizing, the fused enamel lining with its per panel inspection record, the baffled inlet and outlet layout, and the bolted assembly scope that allows the tank to be extended later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Which duties in a treatment plant suit a GFS tank best?
A1: Equalisation, neutralisation hold, filtrate and sludge storage, and chemical dosing holds. Where the fluid is clean water, a galvanized or epoxy lined shell is an equally valid and sometimes cheaper answer.
Q2: Does the lining handle a tank that gets both acid and caustic?
A2: Yes. The enamel covers pH 1 to 14, so alternating and even same-week changes do not force a lining change. Confirm the maximum stream temperature at the same time.
Q3: How much dead volume should I allow?
A3: Count the settled sludge layer, the scum layer, any volume behind a baffle and the volume below the lowest usable outlet. That is the difference between the geometric volume and the working volume, and it is where sizing mistakes hide.
Q4: Do I need baffles?
A4: Usually yes. A baffled inlet well and a clear well with a wall stop short circuit flow, and the effective retention time becomes what the process actually calculated.
Q5: What internal maintenance does the tank need?
A5: Very little on the enamel itself. The attention goes to the flange gaskets, the bolt torque on the first fill, the panel edges, and the desludging interval.
Q6: Can the tank be extended if the plant grows?
A6: Yes, a bolted tank takes extra rings or a neighbouring unit, and the foundation can be designed for the final layout when the expansion plan is known at tender stage.
Q7: What vessel class is it?
A7: Atmospheric storage. It is not a pressure vessel, so any pressure for transfer is developed downstream at the pump or by gravity, not in the tank.
A GFS wastewater treatment tank is the pragmatic answer for the liquid handling duties around a treatment train: equalisation, neutralisation, sludge and filtrate storage, and dosing holds. The fused enamel fired at 820 to 930 °C and spark tested at 1500 V per panel removes the internal recoating cycle, the pH 1 to 14 range covers alternating chemistry, and the bolted format keeps the site work small while leaving room to extend. Get the duty volumes right, detail the baffles and outlet elevation, and fix the permitted foundation settlement. Send the flow and chemistry data to the engineering desk and the tank sizing, lining option and document package will follow.
Talk to an Engineer
Send the treatment data for a tank review: the stream flow and peak values, pH range and temperature, suspended solids and sludge production, the duty each unit has to perform and its holding time, the downstream equipment it feeds, the site coordinates, soil condition, crane availability and preferred port. We will return the tank diameter and height, the working volume calculation, the lining recommendation between glass-fused-to-steel, fusion bonded epoxy and galvanized steel, the baffle and nozzle layout, the foundation loads and the full tender document package. Engineering review first, no obligation.
