The honest answer to 'which material' is 'which duty'. A treatment stage that is quiescent and enormous favours concrete; one that is corrosive, abrasive and space-limited favours a coated steel; one that must stay scrupulously clean or resist chloride favours stainless. Picking a single material for the whole plant, or choosing by first cost alone, is how plants end up with the wrong vessel in the hardest service.

1. Match Material to Duty, Not Price

The governing variables are corrosion aggressiveness, abrasion, temperature, cleanliness requirement, size and site constraints. A primary clarifier holding quiescent sludge is a different problem from an aeration basin full of mixed liquor and diffusers, which is different again from a sludge holding tank breathing sulphide vapour. The material that wins on first cost in one stage may be the most expensive failure in another.

Glass-fused-to-steel (GFS) suits the corrosive and abrasive stages - equalisation, aeration, sludge holding and digestion - because the enamel fused at 820-930 degrees Celsius is inert to sulphide vapour, hard at about 6.0 Mohs, and smooth enough to release consolidated solids. Its bolted, factory-finished nature also means fast erection and a smaller footprint than concrete for the same volume, which matters on constrained sites. It is the default for the chemically aggressive middle of the train.

Stainless steel (304 or 316L) earns its cost where cleanliness, chloride resistance or a pristine surface is decisive - certain potable, pharmaceutical or food-adjacent duties - and where welding and passivation are properly specified.

Can I use GFS for every stage to keep it simple?

For the aggressive middle of the train - equalisation, aeration, sludge holding, digestion - GFS is usually the best single choice and simplifies spares and erection. The stages where concrete wins are the very large quiescent clarifiers where GFS cost per cubic metre is harder to justify, and where stainless wins is where purity or chloride resistance is the deciding factor.

Is concrete always cheaper than steel?

Per cubic metre, yes, at very large volumes and where formwork and ground are favourable. But concrete's vapour-space band is exactly where sewage acid forms, so an unprotected concrete tank may need a lining that erodes its cost advantage. The comparison should include the protection the duty demands.

When does stainless not pay off?

Where the duty is ordinary municipal sewage without chloride or purity demands, stainless's high material and welding cost rarely pays back against GFS. It earns its place when chloride, cleanliness or a pristine surface is the governing requirement, and only when welding and passivation are done correctly.
