Every supplier claims a long life and almost none of them define what would end it. A service life figure is only meaningful when it states the duty, the maintenance regime and the failure mode being assumed. 'Thirty years' on a clean water tank in a temperate climate and 'thirty years' in warm, gritty, sulphide-rich sewage are very different claims.
For glass-fused-to-steel in wastewater, thirty years is a conservative planning figure rather than an optimistic one, and the reason is structural: the coating is an inorganic glass chemically fused into the steel, so there is no organic binder to age, oxidise or saponify. 1. What Service Life Should You Expect?

In municipal and industrial wastewater, a GFS tank is commonly specified for thirty years and beyond, compared with 15-25 years for fusion bonded epoxy and 20-30 years for concrete with periodic repair.

· Abrasion Load: Grit and sand scour the lower shell; a hard surface resists it, but heavy slurry duty still deserves a floor protection review.
· Maintenance of the Details: Sealant condition, bolt torque, external protection and prompt repair of mechanical damage keep a good coating good.
· Cleaning Regime: Approved cleaning methods preserve the surface; abrasive cleaning and unapproved solvents do the opposite.

3. How Is Coating Life Verified Before Delivery?

By measurable properties and by continuity testing, not by a claim. Four checks predict the life of the coating.
· Continuity Testing: Every panel is holiday tested at 1500 V across one hundred percent of the surface, and the shell is retested after erection.
· Thickness Measurement: Dry film thickness is measured per panel, typically 0.25-0.45 mm per side, and recorded.
· Adhesion and Hardness: Fusion bond strength and surface hardness are verified; fused glass typically measures around 3450 N per square centimetre adhesion and 6.0 on the Mohs scale.
