What Is a Vitreous Enamel Water Tank?

A vitreous enamel water tank - often called a glass-fused-to-steel (GFS) tank - is exactly what the name says: steel plate with a layer of glass fused onto it. The glass is not painted on; it is melted into the steel surface at 820-930 C so the two become one inseparable, inorganic skin. The result is a panel that has the strength of steel and the inertness of glass, which is why it is a mainstay for water storage where the surface must not corrode, leach or harbour biofilm. It is a hybrid built in a furnace, not a coating brushed in a field.

1. What the Tank Is Made Of

The panel is low-carbon steel with a vitreous enamel layer fired onto both faces. The steel gives strength and shape; the glass gives the surface that water touches. The two cannot delaminate because they were made one.

2. How the Glass Is Applied

The process is a furnace firing: cleaned steel panels are coated with enamel powder (often in a two-coat system) and passed through a furnace at 820-930 C, where the glass melts and bonds to the steel. After cooling, every panel is holiday-spark tested at 1500 V to prove the glass is unbroken across 100 percent of the surface. This factory control is what makes the lining repeatable panel after panel.

3. Why Glass on Steel Helps

Is vitreous enamel the same as paint?

No - paint is an organic film brushed or sprayed on and can soften, age and undercut; vitreous enamel is glass melted into steel at high temperature, inorganic and inseparable. That is why enamel outlasts paint in water duty and why it is fired, not painted.

Can the glass crack or chip?

The fired skin is tough, but like any ceramic it can be damaged by severe impact. That is why panels are handled and packed with care and why edges are protected; a damaged panel is replaced rather than patched, keeping the lining continuous.

Is it really safe for drinking water?

Yes - qualified enamel systems meet NSF/ANSI 61 for potable contact because the glass is inert and non-leaching. The certificate, not the claim, is what proves it for a given tank.
